Order Of Operations: Multiplication and Division
Here's what you've learned up to now:
* Go from left to right and do any equations that are inside any parentheses.
* Start again from the left and go from left to right and do any multiplication and division equations.
Here's an example:
(2 × 3) × 4 = 24
Going from left to right, we see 2 × 3 inside parentheses. 2 × 3 = 6. So, our equation becomes:
6 × 4
which equals 24.
Here's another example:
8 ÷ (12 ÷ 6) = 4
Again, we start from the left and go from left to right to search for parentheses. 8 is not a parenthesis. The first ÷ sign is not a parenthesis. However, we then come to a set of parentheses that enclose the equation: 12 ÷ 6.
We know that 12 ÷ 6 is 2. So, our equation becomes:
12 ÷ 6
which equals 2.
We know that 12 ÷ 6 is 2. So, our equation becomes:
8 ÷ 2
which equals 4.
