Fractions Subtraction: Common Denominator

Subtracting fractions is just like adding fractions - except that you're doing subtraction and not addition. The material in this unit is very similar to the last unit Fractions: Addition.

The most important thing to remember when subtracting two fractions is that the denominator of each fraction must be the same. In other words, each fraction has a common denominator.

We can subtract 2/4 - 1/4. However, before we subtract 3/10 - 2/5, we must rewrite 2/5 as 4/10.
