Fractions Introduction: Numerator and Denominator

A fraction is a part of a whole. The part is the top of the fraction. The whole is the bottom of the fraction. As an example, let's look at 3/4:

3 Numerator (Top)
4 Denominator (Bottom)

3 is the top. 4 is the bottom. The top is called the numerator. The bottom is called the denominator. To help you learn these terms, FoxyMath will always write numerator (top) and denominator (bottom) in this unit (Fractions Introduction).
