Fractions Introduction: What is a Fraction?

Until now, FoxyMath has dealt with numbers such as 0, 1, 2, 3, and so on: zero or numbers greater than zero. These are whole numbers. But what about numbers such as 1/4 or 2/3? How about 5/4 or 8/5? These numbers, written in division form, are fractions.

Numbers such as 2/2 and 3/3 are not fractions because any number (except zero) divided by itself is 1. However, these numbers are written in the form of a fraction. When you work with fractions, sometimes you will see a number divided by itself such as 4/4.

A fraction is a part of a whole.
