Long Division: Larger Numbers

You just learned how to do the following equation:

```   8
9)72
```

Now take a look at the following example:

```
2)834
```

Does 2 go into 8? Yes: 2 goes into 8 four times. 2 times 4 is 8:

```  4
2)834
-8
0
```

Most people don't write the zero. We do it because you're learning long division.

Now we bring down the 3 at the top. How many times does 2 go into 3? One time:

```  41
2)834
-8
3
-2
1
```

Now we take the 1 at the bottom and put it together with the 4 at the top. How many times does 2 go into 14? Seven times:

```  417
2)834
-8
3
-2
14
-14
0
```

Here's another example:

```
11)132
```

Does 11 go into 1? No. Does 11 go into 13? Yes: 11 goes into 13 one time. 1 times 11 is 13:

```    1
11)132
-11
2
```

Now we take the 2 at the bottom and put it together with the 2 at the top. How many times does 11 go into 22? Two times:

```    12
11)132
-11
22
-22
0
```

We will use what we learned in Basic Multiplication and Column Multiplication when we work with larger numbers. Here's one more example:

```
25)4850
```

How many times does 25 go into 4? Zero. How many times does 25 go into 48? 1. 1 times 25 is 25:

```    1
25)4850
-25
23
```

Now we take the 23 at the bottom and put it together with the 5 at the top. 25 goes into 235 nine times:

Now we take the 10 at the bottom and put it together with the 0 at the top. 25 goes into 100 four times:

```    194
25)4850
-25
235
-225
100
-100
0
```
