Basic Subtraction Lesson 1: Number 1

Welcome to Basic Subtraction. In this unit, you will learn how to subtract numbers from one to twelve and also zero. FoxyMath wishes you success!

Here's an easy example:

=

Maroon Box   Brown Box   RoyalBlue Box  minus     Maroon Box  equals     Brown Box   RoyalBlue Box

We start with three boxes, take away one box, and now have two boxes. We take away one box from our three boxes to get two boxes.

Here's another example:

Chocolate Box   Aqua Box   Fuchsia Box   DarkBlue Box   CornflowerBlue Box  minus     Chocolate Box  equals     Aqua Box   Fuchsia Box   DarkBlue Box   CornflowerBlue Box

We start with five boxes, take away one box, and now have four boxes. We take away one box from our five boxes to get four boxes.

We start with ten boxes, take away one box, and now have nine boxes.

In order to do basic subtraction, you must memorize some equations but fear not: FoxyMath will help you! When you are finished with this lesson, you will know the following equations:

1 - 1 =   0
2 - 1 =   1
3 - 1 =   2
4 - 1 =   3
5 - 1 =   4
6 - 1 =   5
7 - 1 =   6
8 - 1 =   7
9 - 1 =   8
10 - 1 =   9
11 - 1 = 10
12 - 1 = 11

The following exercise will help you learn the above equations and what they mean. Please take your time: take whatever time you need to learn the material.
